Invoice Payment Terms Explained: Due on Receipt, Net 7, Net 15, and Net 30
Payment terms define when a client is expected to pay and what happens if payment is late. Clear terms reduce ambiguity, but the shortest term is not automatically the best choice. The right deadline reflects the commercial agreement, the client's approval process, and the seller's cash-flow requirements.
What common payment terms mean
Due on receipt asks for payment when the invoice is received. Net 7, Net 15, and Net 30 generally mean payment is due 7, 15, or 30 calendar days after the invoice date unless the agreement says otherwise.
Terms can be interpreted differently across companies, holidays, and jurisdictions. Adding an exact due date removes uncertainty and makes reminder schedules easier to automate.
How to choose a reasonable due date
Short projects, one-off deliverables, and independent consulting may use due on receipt, Net 7, or Net 15. Larger organizations often need time for purchase-order matching and internal approval, making Net 30 or a negotiated schedule more realistic.
Consider your working capital before agreeing to a long term. A deposit before work begins, milestone invoices during delivery, or a recurring monthly schedule can reduce the amount left outstanding at the end.
Late fees, discounts, and local rules
If you plan to charge a late fee or offer an early-payment discount, disclose the calculation and conditions in the contract and invoice. Do not add a fee retroactively when it was not agreed.
Limits and disclosure requirements differ by jurisdiction and customer type. Ask a qualified adviser to review late-payment language rather than relying on a generic template.
Make terms visible and actionable
Place the due date near the amount due and repeat it in the delivery email. Payment instructions should identify the accepted currency and route without overwhelming the invoice with unsupported options.
Schedule a courteous reminder before or shortly after the due date. Keep every reminder tied to the same invoice number and public link so the client can verify the current balance and status.
